Since all these major powers of the world are focusing on the Maldives thus it is very usual to strike a question in mind that, why are these countries focusing to invest on the small archipelago of the Maldives which is continuously sinking in water. So let’s get insight into the geographical location of Maldives before digging into the question.
The geographical location of Maldives
The Maldives, officially the Republic of Maldives, is a small archipelagic island country in South Asia, situated in the Arabian Sea of the Indian Ocean. It lies southwest of Sri Lanka and India, about 700 kilometres from the Asian continent’s mainland.
Since the countries located in the Indian Ocean region that is why Maldives has become an extension of the game for regional influence being played out between India and China and for the time being due to the cold war and escalating security threats from China due to its over influence in the region the US has also zoomed the taking part in the Maldives contest.
All the energy supplies coming from Gulf nations pass through this area, A significant portion of world trade takes place through the Indian Ocean. Thus to secure its energy supplies China invested heavily in this Island country which timely emerged as a threat to regional security. China made it a key link in its highly ambitious project of belt and road initiative. Hence by luring the former Maldivian president under capital power, China took 16 geostrategically located islands of Maldives in its control.
Noting the way China is heading along the sea route it seems like it’s encircling India thus India following the footprints of China is also trying to deepen its ties with Maldives. Recently India provided financial aid worth 500 million USD and started seaplane and ship’s fairy. Also, it’s helping male to strengthen its Air Force.
And now another state entering Maldives’ contest in the USA, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced Wednesday that the US would open an embassy in the Maldives. Pompeo held talks with the leadership of the Maldives strategically located in the Indian Ocean. The two countries signed an important defence cooperation agreement a few weeks ago. US Embassy services to the Maldives are currently available from the US Embassy in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Thus even after the concerns that this Island country is continuously sinking in water some of the major powers of the world are moving to invest over there so as to not let a Monopoly to take place on this strategic route having importance from both economic and security perspective for the whole globe.
